The “Darkenu” movement is launching a mass recruitment campaign to fund a pilot to establish a media channel led by and starring Lucy Aharish. Aharish “believes and hopes that this is the beginning of a new and courageous way to produce the media and press that the citizens of Israel need”.

The determination of the chairman of the Central Election Commission that Darkenu is an “active body in elections” is inconsistent with the intention of the legislature, reduces the freedom of political expression during an election period and may severely harm civil society bodies.
The ruling of the chairman of the Central Election Commission, Justice Meltzer, according to which the “Darkenu” movement is considered an active body in the elections and therefore must act in accordance with the Party Funding Law, gives the law too broad an interpretation, in a way that infringes on freedom of expression.
The judge’s recommendation follows the Likud’s petition to the Electoral Commission against Darkenu. This means that if the Electoral Commission forces the Darkenu movement to register on the State Comptroller’s website – the scope of the association’s activities is expected to be reduced – following an amendment to the recent party funding law.
